YUMA, Ariz. – More than 121 students had the opportunity to see different careers in technical fields at Yuma Proving Ground (YPG).
High school and college students had the chance to view many of jobs the Army does at the YPG involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“All the engineering that happens out here. This just gets them excited in that field for STEM, for all the sciences,” Aerial Space Engineer Quan Ho said.
Students learned about artillery, helicopters and even got to try on a parachute.
“Just understand what goes behind the scenes with the Army. Everybody isn’t out fighting, you know? There is other stuff for us to do within the military and you know? You can join the military and still do some good things,” Parachute Tester Sergeant Brandon Hunter.
Cibola High School Student Nicholas Fabela got to try on a parachute.
“They are a lot heavier than I thought, they were and the reserve pack that was fun,” said Fabela.
Many students we talked to said they were more interested in engineering after getting a tour.
“I didn’t think there’d be much in engineering but now I’m thinking that there’s a lot more careers that are available,” Cibola High School Student Calista Garcia said.
